How To

How to Fly Drones for Beginners

A drone is a remote-controlled aircraft used for aerial photography, cinematography, surveillance, scientific research, and hobby purposes. Drones are a technology that has been around since World War II. DJI's Phantom series of quadcopters was the first to be commercially used. Many types of drones have been made available since then, from beginner-friendly models such as the Parrot AR Drone 2.0, to high-end multi-rotor craft such as the DJI Mavic Pro.

There are many methods to fly a Drone, including

  1. Remote control – This technique uses a control device attached directly to your hands that allows you steer the drone around its flight path. There are two main types: Joysticks (like a radio), and On/Off switches (like an alarm clock).
  2. Manual Control – This allows remote operation of the drone via GPS coordinates using a smartphone application. The app will give you instructions.
  3. Autonomous Flying - This allows the drone to take over all of the piloting duties. It allows the drone to fly independently without any human intervention. To enable autonomous flight, the drone should have a built in camera and sensors capable recording images and data.
  4. Triggered Flight – This method is very similar to manual flight. The pilot creates a route that the drone will follow until it reaches the destination. The drone automatically lands once the route has been completed and returns to the base.
  5. Landing Gear: Some drones have landing gear that allows them safely to land in case they lose power or run low on battery.
  6. Goggles - Some pilots wear goggles to protect themselves from debris while operating.
  7. Camera – Some drones have cameras, which allow you to take photos or videos from up high.
  8. Obstacles: Some drones are equipped with obstacle avoidance systems to prevent them from hitting obstacles.
  9. Speed - Some drones can reach speeds of over 40 mph.
  10. Battery Life - Most drones last between 20 and 3 hours depending on how much power they have.
  11. Distance - Some drones can travel up 30 miles depending on the model.
  12. Power source - Not all drones can use an external power source. Others can run on internal batteries.
  13. Weight - Some drones are lighter than others, while some models can weigh as much as 4 pounds.
  14. Size - Drones come in many sizes, from small gadgets that fit in one's hands to large craft that weigh more than 50 lbs.
  15. Price - Drones come in a variety of price categories, including high-end models which can run into the thousands and low-cost options that can start at $100.
