New Government Drone Laws and Regulations

According to a memo, the U.S. Department of Interior banned the use of Blue UAS drones from China. This forced the department spend eight to fourteen times as much money for less efficient machines. The memo was written by lobby groups that include US-based drone manufacturers and a European-based open-source software developer. The Department of Interior, a major player within the drone industry is mentioned in the memo. However, it shows a reluctance of allowing the technology to flourish.

U.S. Department of Defense

A bill brought to the House would require that the defense department reviews its classification system of drones. The current system places them into five broad categories. These groups would be reviewed to determine if they should be changed or updated in light of technological advancements. It would also mandate that DOD's drone regulations, which currently include a list prohibiting certain practices, be reviewed. This article focuses on the bill's provisions and impacts on the military.

The program will use drones that were developed to assess enemy positions and threats in the Middle East. The Pentagon will use drones to identify potential threats and defend the nation. UAS drone technology is capable of high-precision missions. The U.S. Department of Defense plans to continue to examine drone technology. Despite the many uncertainties, these drones are expected to meet DOD security and reliability standards.

Interior Department

800 drones used by the Department of Interior to inspect federally protected land and fight forest fires have been halted by the Department of Interior. David Bernhardt, Interior Secretary, has grounded the drones. He is concerned about cybersecurity and wants to buy U.S.-made drones. The drones are to remain grounded until an assessment of potential security threats is done. Until then, the department will continue to use drones for emergency response and monitoring, but not for any non-emergency missions.

The US Forest Service also uses drones to inspect and control land, fight forest fires, and monitor endangered species. The agency is worried about the ability of drones to transmit sensitive data to foreign governments. A drone could be used in future hacker attacks to spy on US infrastructure. US authorities are also trying to take action against Chinese companies that allegedly steal trade secrets. Each year, US Forest Service purchases billions dollars worth of products form Chinese companies.

Agriculture Department

Recent amendments to the Agriculture Department's Subvention Program make it more affordable to purchase agricultural drones. Farmers Producer Organizations will be eligible for grants of up to 75% to offset the cost. FM's Budget speech said that kisan-drones will be used to evaluate crops and digitise land records. To facilitate the experimentation of drone flying technology, the government is giving farmers a modest grant.

Agriculture Department is also working on technology to assist farmers in soil and crop monitoring. Infrared sensors can help farmers track and monitor crops. This data can be used by farmers to determine the best method to fertilize and distribute land. Spot spraying can also be used by drones for agricultural purposes. This is done in areas where pests or weeds are severe. The drones can also be used for crop inspection. This new technology is already helping farmers, even though the Agriculture Department is still investigating them.

Customs and Border Protection

Customs and Border Protection use drones to patrol and inspect the southwest border. These unmanned aircraft look similar to Air Force drones like the Reaper. Customs and Border Protection can remain aloft for up to 20 hours, without the need to recharge. Customs officers and other federal agencies can also use drones to monitor the lives of everyday Americans on the border. Los Angeles Times published a story recently about how the government successfully used drones in order to stop illegal migration.

radio controlled drones

Although nearly all of the flights made by CBP are for border security, the drones are often deployed to federal agencies for other missions. In one instance, a drone used for disaster response mapping was captured by a CBP drone that spotted a truck erecting a temporary ramp on a fence, while a silver Chevrolet Suburban drove over the ramp in full view of the drone. The drone could track the activity and alert agents who then recovered the 2,317-pounds of marijuana. The drones have also been used to spy on protesters. CBP did not respond to specific questions on the drone's activities. A group of citizen flight-watchers, however, published a log detailing hundreds upon missions. The logs are heavily edited but it gives an overview of the totals.

Commercial operators must register with FAA to receive a license. Local authorities must also approve them if they are operating near airports or in other restricted areas.

Can I fly my drone through my neighborhood?

Yes! These are also known as UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicle). There are several types of drones available for sale today, from small quadcopters to large fixed-wing aircraft. The FAA has recently issued new rules regarding the commercial use of UAVs, which means you can now legally fly them for business purposes. However, be aware that flying a UAV near airports may cause interference with air traffic control systems, and you must obtain permission from local authorities before operating one.

What are the rules for operating drones?

Where can I purchase a drone?

You can find many different types of drones online. Some prefer to purchase their drones via Amazon, eBay, and Walmart. Others opt to purchase their drones direct from manufacturers.

Is Drones Prohibited?

The FAA has prohibited drones from flying close to airports or stadiums, sporting events and nuclear power plants. However, they allow them to fly nightly using GPS technology.
